Hours per resident day (HPRD) is the usual way to compare nursing home staffing. Take total paid nursing hours for a period and divide by resident days in that same period:
HPRD = total paid nursing hours ÷ resident days
Example: 400 nursing hours and 100 resident days → HPRD of 4.0.
PBJ320 often shows total nurse HPRD plus splits for RNs, LPNs/LVNs, and nurse aides, based on CMS nursing job categories. Some views also show direct-care nurse HPRD, which drops DON and administrative RN/LPN hours.
HPRD is a quarterly or daily average—it does not show who was on each shift. More hours does not automatically mean better care, and resident acuity varies. Use it with inspections, complaints, and other facility context. Background: PBJ explained.
